A public disagreement has erupted between Kenyan President William Ruto and Standard Group, one of the country’s leading media houses, after Ruto accused the company of running negative coverage against his administration.
In a post on X, Ruto claimed that repeated critical headlines by the media house amounted to “propaganda” and would not influence his government, challenging the publication to continue its scrutiny. The remarks appeared to be directed at Standard Group and its owner, former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, amid growing criticism of the government’s performance, taxation policies and cost-of-living concerns.

Shortly after the President’s post went viral, Standard Group responded with promotional messages including the phrase, “Even the President Reads The Standard,” in what many viewed as a direct reply to the Head of State.

The exchange has sparked widespread debate in Kenya, with supporters of the government defending Ruto’s remarks while critics argue the comments raise concerns about press freedom and the role of independent media in holding leaders accountable.
The public clash comes as sections of the Kenyan media continue to scrutinize government policies, spending and campaign promises ahead of the country’s next General Election in 2027.
