More than 100 workers have already secured employment through the construction of Kapyego Modern Market in Marakwet East, Elgeyo-Marakwet County, as the KSh205 million project progresses towards providing trading space for 200 traders.
The market project was highlighted during President William Ruto’s development tour of the region, with the foundation stone laid as part of efforts to expand market infrastructure and create economic opportunities for local communities.

The workers employed so far include electricians, plumbers, masons, steel fixers, carpenters, architects and other engineers involved in delivering the project.
The range of occupations involved demonstrates how construction projects can generate employment for skilled workers and tradespeople even before the completed facilities become operational.
Once completed, Kapyego Modern Market is expected to accommodate 200 traders, providing space for them to conduct business.
The facility is intended to support local traders by providing a designated marketplace, while its construction is already creating work for people involved in the building process.
The KSh205 million investment brings together two potential economic benefits: employment during construction and trading opportunities once the market is ready for use.
For the workers engaged in the project, the construction phase employs their respective trades. For traders expected to occupy the market, the planned facility will provide space for commercial activity.
As construction progresses, the project’s longer-term impact will depend on the completion and use of the market, including how effectively it serves traders and supports business activity in Marakwet East.
