The attacks in the towns of Madagali and Hong in the border region with Cameroon, were attributed to Boko Haram jihadists, whose fighters have been active in the area since the group began its violent insurgency in 2009.
Scores of militants stormed Kirawa, in Borno state’s Gwoza district on the border with Cameroon, late Wednesday, setting homes on fire and forcing 5,000 residents to flee the town, Umar Ari, a local anti-jihadist militia leader said.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday briefly visited the prison, where the burnt-out wreckage of a bus and cars marked the scene of the attack, and yellow police tape was stretched across a destroyed section of the prison perimeter.
