The kidnapping of more than 170 people during Sunday services at three churches by gangs known as “bandits” marks the latest in a wave of mass abductions targeting both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.
According to a security report prepared for the United Nations, armed groups known as “bandits” in northwest Nigeria kidnapped “at least 25 residents” in twin assaults on the villages of Unguwar Tsamiya and Dabawa in Kano state.
The state police commissioner said the attackers were herders who had “shot sporadically” during the Monday night raid on the village of Isapa, which neighbours another village where 35 people were kidnapped just a week before.
