Shelling by Sudanese paramilitaries killed five people outside one of the last functioning hospitals in Khartoum’s twin city Omdurman Tuesday, with medical sources reporting escalating violence across the war-torn country.
The UN has launched a $4.2 billion call for funds, targeting 20.9 million people across Sudan from a total of 30.4 million people it said are in need in what it called “an unprecedented humanitarian crisis”.
Since April 2023 fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions more, triggering what the UN calls one of the world’s worst displacement crises.
Chad’s government was accused of aiding the RSF by Sudan’s Darfur Governor Minni Minnawi, who heads a faction allied with the Khartoum government.
The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) voiced alarm at the “inter-connected incidents” which it said resulted in the deaths of 24 people, including 19 civilians.
