The Kenyan Government Spokesperson’s Office has said it has not received any official information from any institution regarding the alleged abduction of Tanzanian citizen Twaha Mwaipaya in the country.

“We have not yet received any information about the incident, so we are monitoring it,” said Charles Owino’s office

The statement comes after the Tanzanian Embassy in Kenya also said it had not received any information regarding the alleged kidnapping of the activist.

Amnesty International Kenya reported the incident, saying Twaha was intercepted by people using three vehicles, including a Toyota Land Cruiser Hardtop.

In a statement posted on social media on Sunday, the organization said Mwaipaya was allegedly abducted at around 2:00 p.m. in the Kamulu area of Nairobi metropolis.

“He was traveling by taxi to visit friends,” the statement said.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya and the Defenders Coalition, have called for urgent action to tracehim.

The case has also raised renewed concerns about what the organizations describe as a cross-border crackdown on political opponents and human rights defenders.

For its part, the Tanzanian government has consistently denied allegations of involvement in illegal actions against political opponents.

To date, no official statement has been issued by security authorities in Kenya regarding the Twaha Mwaipaya abduction incident.
