The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved charges against five allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to the statement released from the DPP’s office, Gachagua’s allies are accused of financing and organizing protests that took place in June and the subsequent months.
“Upon careful perusal, the DPP has directed that there is sufficient evidence to charge the suspects with the offense of conspiracy to commit felony contrary to section 393 of the Penal code,” read the statement.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, recommended charges against several individuals, including Members of Parliament Benjamin Gathiru, James Gakuya, George Theuri, former Nyeri Town MP Wambugu Ngunjiri, and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Private Secretary, Pius Munene.
Wambugu serves as a political advisor in the Deputy President’s office, while Theuri is the youth advisor. Munene holds the position of private secretary to the Deputy President.
These charges are linked to their alleged involvement in the youth-led Generation Z protests that took place in June 2024.
The charges they face include soliciting or inciting others to commit an offense, conspiracy to commit a felony, and money laundering.
The DCI forwarded their findings to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further action.
This development comes amid growing political tensions and calls for the impeachment of Deputy President Gachagua.
