Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto on Friday, August 28, launched the new uniforms for General Duty police officers. Ruto unveiled the new uniforms at the Kiganjo Police Training College in Nyeri County.

Under the new design, police officers will be donning sky-blue shirts paired with dark blue trousers and berets.

The National Police Service (NPS) has also introduced dresses for female police officers in the new uniform changes.

This comes days after the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja announced that President Ruto will launch the new police uniforms at Kiganjo.

Speaking on Tuesday, August 25, Kanja explained that the rollout of new uniforms follows the rejection of the current navy-blue uniforms by police officers during a public participation exercise.

 

The Police IG also revealed that he will begin wearing the new uniform from Monday next week.

 

“We have been using the deep blue uniform, but we are reverting to the one that was agreed upon. I must note that on Monday I must also wear the new uniform,” Kanja stated.

 

IG Kanja also said the new uniforms will be reintroduced to all general duty officers in the next few weeks.

 

Kanja also mentioned that the new uniform is expected to improve the morale of police officers.

 

“In the next few weeks, we should be seeing the new uniform that was approved sometimes back, and I think this is also going to be a force multiplier,” Kanja added.

However, police officers under the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Administration Police Service (APS) will not be affected by the new uniform change.

 

Meanwhile, President Ruto is presiding over the pass-out parade of 6,000 police constables in Kiganjo.

 

The officers were recruited during a nationwide police recruitment exercise held on November 17, 2025, and have been undergoing training.

 

The constables will be deployed to various police stations and NPS units after the pass-out ceremony.
