Since 2021 the region has laboured under the resurgence of the anti-government armed group M23, which has seized large swathes of territory in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, with the support of Kigali and its armed forces.
Around one million Goma residents were holed up in their homes on January 26, 2025, when the Congolese army and its allies were forced to pull out of the provincial capital.
Violent fighting broke out Saturday between the Rwandan-backed M23 armed group and pro-Kinshasa forces in several towns around the strategic eastern DR Congo city of Uvira, local sources said.
A Rwanda-backed militia late Wednesday seized control of most of the city of Uvira, the last government stronghold in the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s South Kivu province.
The M23’s assault comes less than a year after the anti-government armed group seized control of Goma and Bukavu, two key provincial capitals in the mineral-rich eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been plagued by conflict for three decades.
The crown jewel in the M23’s territorial expansion is the DRC’s largest coltan mine from which the group generates around $800,000 in revenue each month, according to UN experts.
