An Iraqi refugee in Sweden who repeatedly burned the Koran in 2023, sparking outrage in Muslim countries, has been shot dead, investigators said Thursday, with Sweden’s prime minister suggesting a “foreign power” might have been involved.
Around 27 percent of Sweden’s population, or more than 2.8 million people, were of foreign origin in 2023, meaning they were either born abroad or both their parents were, according to Statistics Sweden.
Erdogan signalled on Saturday that no progress had been made in Sweden’s bid to join NATO, urging Stockholm to take “concrete actions” to meet Ankara’s concerns.
Turkish officials said Ankara does not view the summit as a final deadline for resolving its objections.
Media reports said the suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, was armed with a knife and an axe, though police have not confirmed that information.
