CNN International’s acclaimed series African Voices returns with a special edition of My Drive, featuring celebrated Kenyan Radio broadcaster Maina Kageni.
In the Nairobi edition, CNN correspondent Larry Madowo joins Classic FM presenter Maina Kageni for a drive through the city, where the veteran radio presenter opens up about his nearly three-decade journey in broadcasting.
Hosted by Lamide Akintobi, the special episode revisits some of the most memorable conversations from the digital series that brought viewers closer to influential personalities across Africa and beyond.
During the drive, Kageni reflects on the secret behind his longevity in an ever-evolving media industry. The veteran broadcaster, who has co-hosted one of Kenya’s most successful breakfast shows for over two decades, says passion has kept him going.
“The day I wake up and I feel like I’m going for a job is the day I’ll quit,” Kageni tells Madowo.
He also speaks about staying relevant to younger audiences, noting that adaptability is key.
“We have to change our attitudes literally every three years or so. Otherwise, it will become irrelevant,” he says.
The conversation also touches on Kageni’s well-known love for luxury cars, with the broadcaster revealing his obsession with the BMW X6.
“I’m obsessed with BMW X6, to be specific. The first time I saw it, I knew this is my car,” he says.
Towards the end of the drive, Kageni shares words of wisdom for aspiring broadcasters and entertainers, emphasizing talent, consistency and dedication.
“You’ve got to have a talent. There’s got to be something you’re going to be doing that is second to none,” he advises.
In addition to the Nairobi feature, the programme will revisit highlights from Akintobi’s conversations with international stars including Rick Ross, Spyro, Kah-Lo, Falana and Chella.
The special edition of African Voices: My Drive will air on CNN International on Tuesday, 8th September 2026 at 7:45 PM EAT, with repeat broadcasts on Saturday, 12th September at 9:30 AM and 1:00 PM; Sunday, 13th September at 5:30 AM and 8:00 PM; and Monday, 14th September at 5:00 AM EAT.
