Retired marathon athlete Samson Kandie was brutally attacked and killed by unknown assailants at his home in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
According to Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwanthi, Kandie was hacked to death within his compound at the Elgon View Estate on Thursday nigt. He however assured the family, friends and Kenyans that the authority is actively investigating the case to find those responsible.
“He was attacked by people who appear to have been waiting for him at the home and we are investigating the incident,” said Mwanthi.
His daughter, Vienna Kandie, recounted the horrifying events, explaining how the family found him severely injured and rushed him to the hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
“My mother called him and he said he was on his way home at about 7.30 pm but we waited and he never arrived,” said Vienna.
After a while it is reportedly that a stranger called the wife, instructing her to look for Kandie behind the toilet where his body was unfortunately found in critical condition.
Their efforts to save him was in vein as he unfortunately passed away upon arrival at the hospital.
Kandie was a celebrated athlete, known for his victories in the 2002 Sapporo and 2004 Vienna marathons1. His death has shocked the community, and many are calling for better security measures for athletes
