ACT-Wazalendo Locked Out of Tanzania Presidential Race as Campaigns Kick Off

Tanzania’s presidential campaigns have officially kicked off today, August 28th with 17 candidates cleared by the National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest in the October 29th polls.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties in Tanzania on Tuesday, August 26th nullified the nomination of Luhaga Mpina as ACT-Wazalendo’s presidential candidate for the 2025 General Election, citing violations of party procedures and rules of membership. INEC later upheld the decision, leaving the opposition party without a presidential flagbearer.

On August 28, 2025, the court proceedings challenging the exclusion of Luhaga Mpina from the presidential race continued. Advocate John Seka led the legal team representing ACT-Wazalendo, while Vivian Method headed the team for the Independent Electoral Commission.

ACT-Wazalendo has rejected the ruling, saying it was illegal interference and has taken the matter to the High Court.

Meanwhile, the ruling party CCM launched its campaigns at Tanganyika Packers grounds in Dar es Salaam, led by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her running mate Emmanuel Nchimbi.
