Tanzania agrees to receive Commonwealth envoy amid governance concerns

Tanzania has agreed to receive a Special Envoy from the Commonwealth Secretary-General following discussions with the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

In a statement released after its meeting on March 7th 2026, CMAG said it held talks with Tanzania’s Minister of State (Special Duties) Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi on issues related to democracy, the rule of law and the political environment in the country.

Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi led Tanzania’s delegation at the 26th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting held in London on March 8, 2026, where he represented Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister Amb. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.

The group said Tanzania will remain on CMAG’s Formal Agenda, meaning the Commonwealth will continue to closely follow developments in the country.

CMAG also welcomed Tanzania’s willingness to facilitate the visit of the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy, who is expected to travel to the country in March 2026.

According to the statement, the envoy’s visit will help provide a clearer assessment of the situation and address issues that have been raised by the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group is responsible for addressing serious or persistent violations of the organization’s political values among member states.
