Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died.

His death was announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi.

Mr Ndejembi said Mr Ameir died at 8am at the Emilio Mzee Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he was receiving treatment for a heart condition.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Mr Ndejembi said.

He conveyed condolences to President Hassan, her family, relatives and friends, as well as all Tanzanians.

Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar – the President’s home village.

Who was Hafidh Ameir?

Ameir, 66, was a Tanzanian agriculturalist and academic and became Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman in history when his wife assumed office on March 19, 2021, after the death of President John Magufuli.

Known for keeping a very low public profile, the retired agriculture officer rarely appeared at official state functions.

He married Samia in 1978. The couple has four children – three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is a politician and currently serves as a Member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
