Kenya Airport Staff to Issue Strike Notice

Kenyan aviation unions will hand over a strike notice next week, a representative told AFP on Friday, threatening disruption at one of Africa’s busiest hubs.

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has held multiple strikes in recent years over pay and conditions.

KAWU’s seven-day strike notice will officially be received on Monday, indicating a walk-out could start from July 27.

It is related to long-running disputes over stalled bargaining arrangements, contractual disputes, and blocked unionisation at low-cost airline Jambo Jet, KAWU secretary-general Moss Ndiema told AFP.

There were major delays at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), one of Africa’s busiest hubs, during a two-day strike in February.

In 2024, JKIA workers took action over a government plan to award India’s Adani Group a tender to expand the airport, warning it would cost local jobs and deprive taxpayers of future airport profits.

Kenya later cancelled the partnership with Adani after its chairman was indicted on corruption charges in the United States, and a new contract has been awarded to the China Road and Bridge Corporation.
