The Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, announced his death on November 27, 2024, confirming that Dr. Ndugulile died in India, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
In her statement, Dr. Ackson expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging Dr. Ndugulile’s significant contributions to Tanzanian politics and health. “His death is a loss not just to Kigamboni, but to all Tanzanians,” she said.
Dr. Ndugulile, born in 1969, was widely respected for his dedication to improving the health sector in Tanzania and beyond. He was recently appointed as the Regional Director-elect for the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa, a milestone that made history for Tanzania.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO, also expressed his condolences on social media, honoring Dr. Ndugulile’s legacy. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan offered her heartfelt sympathy, praising Dr. Ndugulile for his commitment to public service and his country.
Dr. Ndugulile had a notable career, serving as the Deputy Minister for Health, Minister for Communication and Information Technology, and most recently as the Regional Director-elect for WHO Africa. He was known for his principled stance, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when he advocated for health precautions despite political challenges.
