#BREAKING: Tundu Lissu Faces Possible Five-Year Jail Term As Chadema Raises Alarm Ahead Of Treason Verdict

Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, has expressed growing concern over reports circulating ahead of the highly anticipated treason verdict involving its chairman, Tundu Lissu, warning that the case may be politically motivated.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, CHADEMA Deputy Secretary-General Amani Golugwa said the party was disturbed by claims from activists alleging that confidential information regarding the court’s impending decision had been leaked. The reports suggest that Tundu Lissu could face a five-year prison sentence in the treason case against him.

Golugwa alleged that any such conviction would be aimed at sidelining Lissu from Tanzania’s political landscape by creating legal barriers that could prevent him from contesting future elections and continuing his leadership role within the opposition party.

The claims have intensified anxiety among CHADEMA supporters, human rights advocates, members of Lissu’s family and sections of the international community closely monitoring Tanzania’s human rights and democratic governance record.

The opposition official also defended activists who have spoken out against what they describe as threats to justice and the rule of law, arguing that citizens have a responsibility to demand accountability and protect democratic principles.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the case, Golugwa insisted that CHADEMA would continue to defend what it believes are fundamental rights and freedoms without intimidation.

A verdict in the treason case against Tundu Lissu is expected on November 6, 2026, at the High Court of Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam Sub-Registry, in a ruling that could have significant implications for the country’s political future.
