Karua strongly condemned the charges against Lissu, calling them politically motivated and a threat to political competition, especially with the upcoming elections in Tanzania.
The journalists had gone to Kisutu Magistrate Court to cover the hearing of Tundu Lissu’s treason case.
Lissu insisted that his case be heard in person, arguing that his physical presence in court was crucial, as per the law.
Chadema leader Tundu Lissu, who was arrested and charged with treason earlier in the week, previously said that his party would not participate in the polls without electoral reform.
Lissu has consistently called for electoral reforms and warned that Chadema would oppose the elections unless changes are made to ensure free and fair voting.

Lissu garnered 513 votes, translating to 51.5% of the total votes cast. Mbowe got 482 votes (48.3%) while Charles Odero, who had no chance of winning, got 1 vote.
