Chadema leader Tundu Lissu, who was arrested and charged with treason earlier in the week, previously said that his party would not participate in the polls without electoral reform.
Lissu has consistently called for electoral reforms and warned that Chadema would oppose the elections unless changes are made to ensure free and fair voting.
”We will not sideline anyone. We will work together and ensure everyone gets justice”
Mbowe became the Chadema Chairman in 2004, taking over from Bob Makani. During his time, he helped Chadema grow from a small party into Tanzania’s main opposition force
Lissu garnered 513 votes, translating to 51.5% of the total votes cast. Mbowe got 482 votes (48.3%) while Charles Odero, who had no chance of winning, got 1 vote.
Although the official results are yet to be announced, Mbowe expressed his respect for the process and his support for Lissu’s potential leadership.
The outcome of this election could shape the future of Chadema and Tanzanian opposition politics.
